::TREATMENT FOR THE CURE OF OBSSESIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD) WITH HYPNOTHERAPY AND COGNITIVE THERAPY IN CENTRAL LONDON (CITY, nr OLD STREET), DARTFORD, KENT; LEIGH ON SEA, SOUTHEND, ESSEX:

What is Obsessive Complusive Disorder (OCD)?

The term OCD covers a wide range of symptoms which would are extremely diverse.  Any of the actions described below could be described as a form of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD):

  • Constantly checking things – anything from did you lock the door to switching off the Iron or cooker, the sufferer is plagued by feelings of doubt and dread and overwhelming feels the compulsion to go back and check again and again.

  • Repeated rituals -  this type of OCD could be anything from having the volume control switch on an even number or the number 10 through to having touched something with one hand, having the overwhelming urge to make sure it is touched with the other. The compulsion and drive behind completing the ritual is the thought and belief that something bad will happen (eg house burning down with the dog in it) if it is not completed.

  • Fear of Germs and Contamination. These thoughts and feelings generate the compulsion to clean everything thoroughly again and again. Sufferers of OCD with this symptom usually spend a significant amount of time making sure everything is spotless around the house and  exhibit extremely high standards of personal hygene and appearance (although they may consider these standards normal).

  • Hoarding – the inability to give things up easily or let go of something. Driven by the belief that everything has some value and may be needed at some point in the future.

  • Intrusive thoughts – the sufferers of this type of OCD are plagued by repeated thoughts which they are unable to control. The thoughts are usually of something which goes against the persons’ moral code – for example, hurting someone. In many cases the thoughts can be sexual in nature.

  • Fixation – in this case the person may be plagued of thoughts about a particular person which may be someone they know or someone off of the television.
  • Difficulty overcoming a relationship breakup. Although this is not often attributed to OCD, in many cases where a person is having difficulty getting over a break up years after the event it is usually down to the obsessional nature of their thinking.
  • Lists – the desire to write lists and lists of lists to ensure that no tasks are forgotten.

  • Overwhelming desire for asymmetry, tidiness and neatness. Every thing must be aligned or symmetrical and in it's place.

While any person may experience the above symptoms at some point in their life, a person suffering from OCD will be completely obsessional about them and no matter how hard they try practically find it impossible to stop thinking about them. This duly causes a great deal of anxiety and stress for the OCD sufferer.

What causes OCD?

OCD is casused by the feeling of being out of control. Most sufferers of OCD have a strong desire for control and very much like to be in control, and the behaviour of all of the symptoms listed above is an attempt to grasp and feel more in control. Unfortunately our instinctive reactions and attempts to regain control usually makes the symptoms far worse in the long run and maintains and fuels the OCD. This also explains why the OCD sufferes sypmtoms often deteriorate when they are under more stress and pressure.

Many of the sufferers of OCD that have consulted us for assistance often share similar personality traits, including a tendency to over analyze things, a strong desire for control, a high degree of perfectionism, difficulty trustubf people, and a high standard of personal hygiene and appearance.
